I was ordering books for the library today and Suzanne Somers'
Ageless appeared on the book list (we order online now). This book has been nearly universally panned. We've already had patrons request it. I had to repeat to myself:
We are not to judge the books.
We are to provide the books.
I sure am glad I don't have to worry about the OJ book, anymore.
~~~o0o~~~
Wish I'd had that mantra back in my bookseller days! Then, there's always the "We do not judge the customer. We sell books to the customer" mantra when they approach the info desk asking for a book, whose cover they think is red, they saw on Oprah. Oy vey.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, books by color. Sometimes, they remember the thickness. Better are the kids who ask for a book on a subject, needed for a school assignment, preferably under 100 pages! :)
ReplyDeleteThere are just some things I won't buy or borrow for that very reason.
ReplyDeleteI don't want to have to check it out with a person.
That's why I'd hide it in a tom calncy dust cover and read it without checking it out...
lol, Useless Man. :)
ReplyDeleteI am really glad that we don't have to worry about the OJ book. I would have a hard time not glaring at the person who was checking it out. I don't know much about "Ageless," other than it is about bioidentical hormones. I haven't the slightest idea what they are.
ReplyDeleteDamn right! And don't judge other people, 'cuz they're not books!
ReplyDeleteOk, that was lame...
You think that book sucks? Check out her poetry book sometime. One of my bro's and his friends had a copy back in the early 90s, and they used to pass it around until it was dog-eared. I assumed it was porn until I snuck a peek at it--then I realized they were using it to mock their gfs with! Same diff, actually, when you think about it.
ReplyDeleteI heard about that book. Unfortunately, Ageless is putting out unproved and possibly misleading medical/health info and that can be dangerous.
ReplyDeleteTho I suppose bad poetry could be dangerous, too. ;)
I have no idea who you are, but I dig you man!
ReplyDeletePeace out :-0
Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteThanks. :)
ReplyDeleteYou definately have to have a certain amount of tolerance when listening to people ask where the Oprah books are in a bookstore. Don't get me wrong, Oprah did wonders for the bookstore that I worked in, but I always wished that people would expand on their horizons... mind you Suzanne Somers and OJ are a far cry from being classified as wonderful literature.
ReplyDeleteOne of my personalities is a librarian and we all love chocolate, so I spent a bit of time reading your blog today. It's nice. Thank you for sharing the book mantra. It's just right. I'm not a fan of hers, but I read stuff that other people would disapprove of. I read to see what's in the author's mind, and sometimes I bump into empty space. Anyway, thanks again for sharing that.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Judi. Glad you enjoyed it. :)
ReplyDeleteI would not have supported banning the OJ book because freedom of speech means that one must often see or read that which he or she may greatly oppose, that which may offend and/or that which may provoke a variety of emotions. However, I was pleased that most Americans exercised their freedoms to ignore. I,too, am glad that I don't have to see it all over store windows.
ReplyDeleteaI think it's great to know that other professions have those little things they say to themselves when faced with... challenging situations.
ReplyDeleteAs for nurses, most think "I do not judge the person. I treat the patient."
I think "Stomping my feet and throwing things does not serve a purpose, stomping my feet and throwing things does not serve a purpose..."
lol, Lari. I would think, tho, that it does release a lot of negative energy. ;)
